Doing life

It’s been a little quiet on the blog this last couple years; we were busy doing life. Circling back to my annual tradition, my theme word for 2026 is basically to keep on, keeping on with doing life

Our world looks a little bit different today. My oldest has graduated college and is on the hunt for a “real job,” our middle is going to be heading to high school in the fall, and our youngest is in middle school. My dad passed away in November after a bad fall, and various family members have been keeping mom busy with travel and kid activities.

My last post was about my very bad broken ankle a couple of years ago – and let me tell you, it was a doozy. I spent months doing rehab and getting back up to full speed. I had a love/hate relationship with the knee scooter, and then the boot. But, I still made it to all the baseball games, we still traveled and enjoyed life. It just looked a little different. And, all that rehab was worth it – we walked 73 miles during a 10-day trip to Europe over Thanksgiving to visit the oldest while she was studying abroad.

Last year, we were busy with a lot of kid sports, family milestones, and travel with both sets of grandparents to various places. My husband started a new job. I took on a new role at work myself. And we were very busy, doing life.

This next year, we will definitely have more of the same. Finishing out our last season of regional travel basketball for the middle – and moving on to high school sports before we know it. One more baseball season with the buddies before high school. More Girl Scout cookies coming up (next week!?!), adventures in basketball, softball, and volleyball for the youngest. And she’ll be going to 6th grade camp…already.

As always, life with kids brings us the gift of long days and short years. My kids still push new boundaries with us, every day. They are also our greatest joy.

In the middle of all of that, I am also trying to reconnect with friends, serving on several boards and commissions, and taking on a few new speaking opportunities as they come. One of the biggest things I’ve learned over the years is that juggling life doesn’t have a rule book – it’s about taking one thing at a time and doing whatever comes next. We all have obligations to fulfill: to our kids, our spouses, our families, and our clients/bosses/work partners. The only way to tackle all of those challenges is to check things off our to-do list and move on to the next item.

Doing life is about both the big and little things, every day.
